83. Al-Mutaffifin
المطففين“The Defrauding”

All Verses
وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ
Woe to those who give less [than due],1
waylun lil'muṭaffifīna
ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكْتَالُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ
Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full.
alladhīna idhā ik'tālū ʿalā l-nāsi yastawfūna
وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ
But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.
wa-idhā kālūhum aw wazanūhum yukh'sirūna
أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ
Do they not think that they will be resurrected
alā yaẓunnu ulāika annahum mabʿūthūna
لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
For a tremendous Day -
liyawmin ʿaẓīmin
يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?
yawma yaqūmu l-nāsu lirabbi l-ʿālamīna
كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْفُجَّارِ لَفِى سِجِّينٍ
No! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in sijjeen.
kallā inna kitāba l-fujāri lafī sijjīnin
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سِجِّينٌ
And what can make you know what is sijjeen?
wamā adrāka mā sijjīnun
كِتَـٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ
It is [their destination1 recorded in] a register inscribed.
kitābun marqūmun
وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
Woe, that Day, to the deniers,
waylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīna
ٱلَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
Who deny the Day of Recompense.
alladhīna yukadhibūna biyawmi l-dīni
وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ
And none deny it except every sinful transgressor.
wamā yukadhibu bihi illā kullu muʿ'tadin athīmin
إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَـٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَـٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."
idhā tut'lā ʿalayhi āyātunā qāla asāṭīru l-awalīna
كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning.1
kallā bal rāna ʿalā qulūbihim mā kānū yaksibūna
كَلَّآ إِنَّهُمْ عَن رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ
No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned.1
kallā innahum ʿan rabbihim yawma-idhin lamaḥjūbūna
ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُوا۟ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
Then indeed, they will [enter and] burn in Hellfire.
thumma innahum laṣālū l-jaḥīmi
ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ
Then it will be said [to them], "This is what you used to deny."
thumma yuqālu hādhā alladhī kuntum bihi tukadhibūna
كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْأَبْرَارِ لَفِى عِلِّيِّينَ
No! Indeed, the record of the righteous is in ʿilliyyūn.
kallā inna kitāba l-abrāri lafī ʿilliyyīna
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ
And what can make you know what is ʿilliyyūn?
wamā adrāka mā ʿilliyyūna
كِتَـٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ
It is [their destination1 recorded in] a register inscribed
kitābun marqūmun
يَشْهَدُهُ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ
Which is witnessed by those brought near [to Allāh].
yashhaduhu l-muqarabūna
إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ
Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure
inna l-abrāra lafī naʿīmin
عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ
On adorned couches, observing.
ʿalā l-arāiki yanẓurūna
تَعْرِفُ فِى وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
You will recognize in their faces the radiance of pleasure.
taʿrifu fī wujūhihim naḍrata l-naʿīmi
يُسْقَوْنَ مِن رَّحِيقٍ مَّخْتُومٍ
They will be given to drink [pure] wine1 [which was] sealed.
yus'qawna min raḥīqin makhtūmin
خِتَـٰمُهُۥ مِسْكٌ ۚ وَفِى ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلْمُتَنَـٰفِسُونَ
The last of it1 is musk. So for this let the competitors compete.
khitāmuhu mis'kun wafī dhālika falyatanāfasi l-mutanāfisūna
وَمِزَاجُهُۥ مِن تَسْنِيمٍ
And its mixture is of Tasneem,1
wamizājuhu min tasnīmin
عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ
A spring from which those near [to Allāh] drink.
ʿaynan yashrabu bihā l-muqarabūna
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا۟ كَانُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يَضْحَكُونَ
Indeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.
inna alladhīna ajramū kānū mina alladhīna āmanū yaḍḥakūna
وَإِذَا مَرُّوا۟ بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ
And when they passed by them, they would exchange derisive glances.
wa-idhā marrū bihim yataghāmazūna
وَإِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمُ ٱنقَلَبُوا۟ فَكِهِينَ
And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.
wa-idhā inqalabū ilā ahlihimu inqalabū fakihīna
وَإِذَا رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّونَ
And when they saw them, they would say, "Indeed, those are truly lost."
wa-idhā ra-awhum qālū inna hāulāi laḍāllūna
وَمَآ أُرْسِلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ حَـٰفِظِينَ
But they had not been sent as guardians over them.
wamā ur'silū ʿalayhim ḥāfiẓīna
فَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ
So Today1 those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers,
fal-yawma alladhīna āmanū mina l-kufāri yaḍḥakūna
عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ
On adorned couches, observing.
ʿalā l-arāiki yanẓurūna
هَلْ ثُوِّبَ ٱلْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْعَلُونَ
Have the disbelievers [not] been rewarded [this Day] for what they used to do?
hal thuwwiba l-kufāru mā kānū yafʿalūna
